While there are all kinds of fun activities that you can do while boating, one thing that isn’t so fun is getting a sunburn. Boaters tend to be exposed to a lot of sun, which can lead to serious skin damage if the proper precautions are not taken. That is why Tommy’s Boats has created this guide to sun protection while boating.

1. Wear a Hat

Your head and the back of your neck are some of the most vulnerable areas when it comes to sun damage. Luckily, all it takes is a long-billed ball cap or a wide-brimmed nylon hat to provide the shade you need. Of course, you can wear any style of hat that you please as long as it provides adequate protection from the sun, so don’t be afraid to choose something that better fits your individual style.

2. Get a Pair of Sunglasses

Long-term exposure to UV light can damage your eyes, so find a pair of sunglasses that will provide you with sufficient protection. Polarized lenses can help reduce glare from light bouncing off the water, which will increase your visibility.

3. Wear Long Sleeves & Pants

While shorts may be the standard summer attire, they do not provide much sun protection. Instead, try wearing pale-colored, loose clothing that has long sleeves and is made from lightweight fabric. This will keep the sun off your skin while helping you stay cool.

4. Sunscreen

Most people know the importance of applying sunscreen. However, there are many details about proper sunscreen usage that you may not be aware of. For example, experts recommend that you use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Since you will be boating, you will probably need to purchase waterproof sunscreen. And of course, regularly reapplying your sunscreen every few hours will help ensure proper sun protection.
